Gov. Bev Perdue announced today that Facebook, the world’s leading social networking service connecting more than 500 million people, will locate a multi-million dollar data center in Rutherford County. More than 250 construction and mechanical jobs are expected to be generated during its 18-month building phase. Upon completion, the data center will employ around 35-45 full-time and contract workers. Facebook is expected to invest about $450 million dollars in the new data center.
Rutherford County has suffered economically due to the decline of the manufacturing and textile industries.
In a press release, Lt. Governor Walter Dalton commented on the social media giant coming to his home county:
“The opening of this data center is a shining example of the public and private sectors working together to create new opportunities for North Carolina communities.
This project also represents a tremendous and important transition from our state’s traditional industries to the world’s new knowledge-based economy. For over 100 years, Rutherford County clothed the world as a textile giant. Today, Rutherford County will be playing a role in connecting the world.
As a native of Rutherford County, I welcome Facebook to my home. I can assure the leadership at Facebook that this is a decision that they will be proud of making..."
